There is a great controversy in the golfing community with one side stating that aquiring golf fitness from weight training is beneficial to playing good golf while the other side thinks that it is counter productive to golf swings. If there is such great divide in opinion on this matter, then why is it that the majority of the professional golfers in the Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) Tour are including weight training into their golf fitness exercises training programs to improve their golf games for competitions?

As I see it, this confusion probably centers around which training modalities and exercises should golfers include in their golf fitness training and whether the physical workouts are similar to those usually found in health clubs and fitness gyms. That is why many are clueless as to whether they should include weight training such as using dumbbells and barbells into their golf fitness exercise program.

You see, the main objective of a golf fitness program is to improve your game by the physical development of the muscles in your body. In order for you to achieve this objective, the workouts and exercises must be designed to develop the body for the maximum effectiveness of the golf swing.

A good golf swing is a total body athletic movement as the entire body is used to swing the golf club, not just the movements of the arms. This is called the integrated total body athletic action. This is the reason why a good golf fitness program must incorporate exercises for the entire human body.

For example, the golf swing incorporates a rotational movement of the core which include your abs, lower back, hips, and the obliques muscles. Therefore to have a good golf swing, then it is very obvious that these muscles must be worked at and strengthened in an integrated golf specific exercise such as the Physio Ball Russian Twist where all the above mentioned muscles are being worked out in an arc pattern.

This form of exercise is very much different from the usual core exercises such as the sit ups and crunches. The idea here is to integrate the muscles of the body in its totality movements instead of just isolating each muscle such as in a dumbbell curl.

Next, the exercises and workouts for golf fitness training should also include anatomical positions, movement patterns and also increasing strength for good and powerful golf swings. What this means is that you should train with exercises that move your body through the ranges of motion of the golf swing to increase mobilty, flexibility, power and strength.

Since the golf swing is executed in a standing upright position, then naturally the physio-ball squat exercise will be far superior than say, the tricep extension. This is because the physio-ball squat places your body in a position similar to a position in which the golf swing is being executed whereas the tricep extension exercise only isolates your triceps. So the tricep extension exercise does not train the body in an integrated movement and also not in a position somewhat similar to the golf swing as it is done in a stationary position.

So if you want to incorporate weight training into your golf fitness training program, then you must keep to the instructions of integration and cross-specific training to improve your health and your golf game.

Therefore golf fitness training is definitely beneficial to improving your golf games when you train with the correct exercises for maximum effectiveness for your golf swings.
